Periodontal Diagnostic and Treatment Protocol.
In dental practice, periodontal disease rarely manifests as acute diseases, such as NUG and NUP. It is usually a chronic process that can become progressive over time. To monitor this progression, it is necessary to periodically screen periodontal tissue using a parameter (an "index") with which to compare observations over time. The Dutch Periodontal Screening Index (DPSI) is a valuable tool for this purpose.
At each periodic checkup, the dentist records the patient's periodontal situation using this method. This routine procedure allows the dentist to assess whether or not a patient is suffering from periodontitis. The DPSI index is therefore the basis for the periodontal diagnosis and treatment protocol described below.
