In particular, the periodontist performs gum treatments when inflammation is present. If only the gums are inflamed, this is called gingivitis. A more severe inflammation that also affects the jawbone is called periodontitis. If left untreated, your teeth can become loose and even fall out. If a periodontist is not available in your own dental office, your dentist can refer you to a periodontist.

You will need a referral letter from your dentist for this. After treatment with the periodontist, you will always return to your own dentist.

periodontitis

A visit to the periodontist ensures that not only can you have possible periodontitis diagnosed, but that appropriate treatment can be started immediately. For many people who visit the periodontist at TEC Maastricht, it is not clear exactly what periodontitis is.

This is a chronic disease that affects not only the gums, but also the bone that surrounds the tooth. In the majority of cases, the condition affects multiple teeth and/or molars. The process begins from the moment bacteria in plaque cause inflammation of the gums. The initial form of this inflammation is called gingivitis. The gums look red and swollen; in addition, they bleed easily.

In the majority of cases, periodontitis is caused by inadequate tooth brushing.

Why is periodontology so important?

If left untreated, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) can result in periodontal disease. This chronic inflammation of the gums is then impossible to prevent.

Over time, this inflammation will destroy not only the gums, but also the fibers that cause the tooth to attach to the bone, the attachment and the bone itself (periodontitis).

When one notices that one or more teeth are becoming loose, it is usually already too late. This makes the importance of periodontology immediately clear.

What can a periodontist do for you?

A periodontist is a dental specialist who focuses specifically on diagnosing and treating periodontal disease. Several factors may indicate that you should visit a periodontist. We have listed some of the most important concerns for you:

  • Gums start bleeding while you think you are brushing properly
